Owning a car in Kenya has become a necessity as it provides a means of transport that is convenient for one’s personal use, such as commuting to work or traveling for personal family travel. Owning a car comes with risks such as theft, road accidents, and other risks on Kenyan roads. Comprehensive insurance therefore comes in handy as a safety precaution against these risks, as it guarantees the owner of a car financial compensation in case such incidents happen.
This article gives a brief and in-depth overview of comprehensive car insurance in Kenya, covering basic comprehensive car insurance concepts, costs, and some of the best insurance companies offering affordable comprehensive car insurance in Kenya.
What is Comprehensive Car Insurance in Kenya?
Comprehensive car insurance is the highest level of motor insurance in Kenya. Unlike third-party-only insurance, which is the legal minimum, comprehensive covers both your own car and third parties.
In Kenya, IRA-licensed companies offer 3 types of motor insurance:
- Third Party Only (TPO): Mandatory minimum to drive on Kenyan roads. Covers only other people and their property.
- Third Party Fire and Theft: Covers third parties plus fire and theft of your own car.
- Comprehensive Insurance: Full coverage – covers your car, third parties, theft, fire, accidental damage, and more.
For any car worth over Ksh 800,000 or any car on loan, comprehensive is highly recommended.
What Does Comprehensive Car Insurance Cover in Kenya?
Here is what is covered under a standard comprehensive insurance in Kenya:
- Loss, Theft or Accidental Damage: Covers repair costs or total loss if your car is stolen, vandalised or damaged in an accident.
- Third Party Liabilities: Covers death or bodily injury to third parties and occupants (except the driver, who should be covered by a Personal Accident Insurance Cover).
- Medical Expenses: Covers medical bills for passengers injured in your car during an accident.
- Third Party Property Damage: Covers damage you cause to other people’s cars, walls, and buildings.
- Windscreen Damage: Up to Ksh 50,000 standard limit.
- Entertainment System: Car radio/music system up to Ksh 30,000 standard limit.
- Towing & Recovery: Emergency towing after an accident to the nearest garage.
What is NOT Covered by Comprehensive Insurance?
Standard comprehensive does NOT cover these unless you add them as optional benefits:
- Consequential loss – Loss of income because your car is in garage.
- Depreciation, wear and tear, mechanical/electrical breakdown.
- Tyre damage unless other parts of the car are also damaged.
- Contents inside the car: phones, laptops. You need All Risk Insurance for that.
- Damage from overloading.
- Political Violence & Terrorism (PVT) – Damage from maadamano, riots, strikes.
- Natural calamities – Floods, like the recent Nairobi floods.
Important Optional Benefits You Should Add
The following can be taken up as optional benefits while purchasing comprehensive car insurance.
A)Excess Protector
Excess is the amount you pay from your pocket before the insurance pays. Example: If the excess is Ksh 30,000 and the damage is Ksh 200,000, you pay 30k; the insurer pays 170k. Excess protection removes this burden, so you pay zero.
Excess protector therefore relieves an insurance client from the burden of paying their own damage excess for an accident claim.
It is important to note that the damage sustained to the vehicle and the cost of repairs must be above the policy excess amount. Claims falling below the primary excess are not recoverable. The excess protector is charged at a percentage of the value of the motor vehicle. E.g., own damage excess is 2.5% of the value of the sum assured, subject to minimum and maximum values
B)Political Violence and Terrorism
This is an optional benefit that covers a motor vehicle against incidents that arise out of political violence and terrorism e.g. Maadamano, Strikes and Civil Commotions.
C)Courtesy car
A courtesy car is a temporary vehicle provided by the insurance company (or through an agreement with a garage) to keep the policyholder mobile while their own car is being repaired. This benefit means that an insurance client has a temporary car to use as it is being fixed in case of an accident. The benefit may also be provided by an insurance company through payment of some amounts for a specified period instead of the provision of a temporary car.
D) Rescue and Towing Benefits
This is a benefit that is provided by the insurer to tow or recover your vehicle when it becomes immobile due to an accident, mechanical breakdown, or other covered incident. This benefit is provided by some insurers for free but limited to the distance covered and beyond a certain limit that they may charge a fee per Kilometre covered. The benefit is also offered at a fee to access a panel of rescue and towing providers e.g. AA Kenya.
E) Other enhanced and Complementary Benefits
Insurance companies are also offering enhanced benefits to give more value to their clients; this includes higher limits for windscreens and music systems.
For instance, on average most underwriters have a limit of Ksh 50,000 for windscreen and Ksh 30,000 for Vehicle music system, these limits may be below the value of the covered items, therefore at an additional premium, they are covered at higher limits that is within the market range to replace them.
Personal Accident as a Complementary Benefit
Did you know that Comprehensive Car insurance does not cover the driver for medical and other accident-related incidents? A majority of insurance consumers do not know of this fact. Therefore, as you purchase a motor insurance cover, always get personal accident insurance to cover you as a driver.
How Much Does Comprehensive Car Insurance Cost in Kenya?
The cost is calculated as a percentage of your car’s current market value plus levies (0.25% training levy + 0.25% PCF levy) + Stamp Duty.
Factors affecting your rate:
- Car Value: From valuation report or dealer value
- Car Age: Most insurers don’t cover cars older than 15 years
- Car Make/Model: Some car models are loaded with a premium based on risk profiling by the underwriters.
- Driver Age & Claims History: No Claim Discount (NCD) can save you up to 30%
Comprehensive insurance for most underwriters has a basic minimum premium cost of Ksh 37,500
