Domestic Home Insurance in Kenya

Our homes are safe havens where we retreat to after spending most hours of the day in the workplace. The home could be either the ancestral home, a rented place or a place you bought and bought a residential living place. This home is where you have invested in furnishing the house, where you store your valuables and belongings, and if you have a domestic worker it’s also their home with your family.

Despite the home being a safe haven from which you retreat, various risks face the home. This includes fire, natural disasters like floods, theft, and even legal liability from your domestic workers. In response to these potential risks, one can take up a domestic home insurance policy and transfer the risks to an insurance company.

What is Covered by Domestic Home Insurance

Domestic insurance coverage is generally categorised into two sections on what it covers; Building Section and Contents Section.

A Home Domestic insurance cover under the building section will cover the following things:

  1. The House itself
  2. Fixtures and fittings
  3. Walls
  4. Gates
  5. Fences

All in the same premises.

On the other hand, the content section covers the following in a home insurance policy:

  1. Household contents such as furniture, clothes and moveable personal items.

In a domestic insurance policy, All Risk items that are covered within the contacts section include movable items that you move with from the house including; Mobile Phones, laptops, Cameras, jewelry, watches, etc.

    Home Owner’s Liability

Domestic home insurance also covers the owner of the house against liability risks where the owner or occupant may be held liable or responsible for an action of fault resulting in direct or indirect loss or damage.

An example of liability risk is associated with domestic workers such as a house manager, a gardener and a watchman. The actions of these domestic workers may pose a liability risk to the owner of the home where he/she is held liable for their actions.

Domestic insurance, therefore, extends to cover this liability, as well as WIBA. ( Work Injury Benefits Act)

    Cost of Domestic Home Insurance

The cost of domestic insurance is based on a number of factors such as the value of the contracts and if you are the owner of the building.
