Owning a car in Kenya has become a necessity as it provides a means of transport that is convenient for one’s personal use such as commuting to work or traveling for personal family travel. Owning a car comes with risks such as theft, road accidents and other susceptible risks on the Kenyan roads. Comprehensive insurance therefore comes in handy as a safety precaution against these risks where it guarantees the owner of a car financial compensation in case such incidents happen. This article gives a brief and in-depth overview of comprehensive car insurance in Kenya covering basic comprehensive car insurance concepts, costs and some of the best insurance companies offering affordable comprehensive car insurance in Kenya.
In Kenyan licensed insurance companies offer three types of motor insurance covers. This includes:
| Third Party Only Insurance | The bare minimum mandatory Insurance requirement for Vehicles to drive on Kenyan roads. It only covers third parties. |
| Third Party, Fire and Theft Insurance | This Insurance Covers third parties, Fire and Theft of Motor Vehicle. It is not a popular cover and its premiums are slightly almost the same as the comprehensive cover. |
| Comprehensive Insurance | Offers comprehensive full coverage of Motor Vehicles. |
Comprehensive Insurance in Kenya covers the following:
The following are not covered by comprehensive car insurance policy if some are not taken up as additional coverage, as later highlighted under optional coverage:
The following can be taken up as optional benefits while purchasing comprehensive car insurance.
In insurance, the excess is the first amount of claim that a policyholder has to bear in any claim before the insurance can come in to cover the balance of the claim.
Excess protector therefore relieves an insurance client from the burden of paying their own damage excess for an accident arising out of the collision. It is important to note that the damage sustained on the vehicle and the cost of repairs must be above the policy excess amount. Claims falling below the primary excess are not recoverable.Excess protector is charged at a percentage of the value of the motor vehicle.
This is an optional benefit that covers a motor vehicle against incidents that arise out of political violence and terrorism e.g. Maadamano, Strikes and Civil Commotions.
A courtesy car is a temporary vehicle provided by the insurance company (or through an agreement with a garage) to keep the policyholder mobile while their own car is being repaired. This benefit means that an insurance client has a temporary car to use as it is being fixed in case of an accident. The benefit may also be provided by an insurance company through payment of some amounts for a specified period instead of the provision of a temporary car.
This is a benefit that is provided by the insurer to tow or recover your vehicle when it becomes immobile due to an accident, mechanical breakdown, or other covered incident. This benefit is provided by some insurers for free but limited to the distance covered and beyond a certain limit that they may charge a fee per Kilometre covered. The benefit is also offered at a fee to access a panel of rescue and towing providers e.g. AA Kenya.
Insurance companies are also offering enhanced benefits to give more value to their clients; this includes higher limits cover for windscreens and music systems.
For instance, on average most underwriters have a limit of Ksh 50,000 for windscreen and Ksh 30,000 for Vehicle music system, these limits may be below the value of the covered items, therefore at an additional premium, they are covered at higher limits that is within the market range to replace them.
Did you know that Comprehensive Car insurance does not cover the driver for medical and other accident-related incidents? A majority of insurance consumers do not know of this fact. Therefore, as you purchase a motor insurance cover, always get personal accident insurance to cover you as a driver.
The cost of comprehensive Insurance in Kenya is computed as a percentage of the value of the car. Underwriters provide different percentage rates for different car value ranges. Therefore in summary comprehensive car insurance is based on the following:
Comprehensive insurance for most underwriters has a basic minimum premium cost of Ksh 37,500
| Car Value Range | Premium Percentage | Minimum Premium | Underwriter |
| 800,000 – 1,000,000 | 4% 6% | 30,000 – 35,000 37,500 | Kenindia , Kenyan Alliance Pioneer |
| 1,000,000 – 1,500,000 | 3.5% 5% | 35,000 37,500 | Kenyan Alliance Pioneer |
| 1,5000,000 – 2,000,000 | 4% | 37,500 | Pioneer |
| 3,500,000 and Above | 2.75 % | Heritage |
As indicated comprehensive insurance is pegged on the value of the car then levies and taxes are added to get the basic premium cost, additionally, if optional benefits are taken up their cost are also included in the quotation.
